About This Trip

Experience the raw, unfiltered beauty of the island on The Wild Heart of Ceylon, a 10-day expedition that goes beyond the standard safari. This journey is designed for the active traveler, combining the thrill of the “Great Elephant Gathering” in Minneriya with the rugged, misty peaks of the Knuckles Mountain Range, a UNESCO World Heritage site perfect for trekking. You will venture south to the legendary Yala National Park to track leopards before immersing yourself in the prehistoric silence of the Sinharaja Rainforest, where endemic birds and rare biodiversity await at every turn.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival & The Gathering

  • Arrive at Bandaranaike International Airport and transfer to the Cultural Triangle area.
  • Prepare for the days of adventure ahead.
  • Overnight: Habarana/Minneriya area.

Days 2 & 3: Giants of Minneriya

  • Spend two days exploring Minneriya National Park, world-famous for the “Great Elephant Gathering” (season dependent).
  • Enjoy morning and afternoon Jeep safaris to observe large herds of elephants grazing by the tank.
  • Key Sightings: Asian Elephants, deer, and diverse water birds.
  • Overnight: Habarana/Minneriya area.

Days 4 & 5: Peaks of Knuckles

  • Travel to the Knuckles Mountain Range, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its cloud forests and biodiversity.
  • Embark on guided hikes through scenic trails, waterfalls, and rural villages.
  • Key Sightings: Lizards, endemic birds, and breathtaking mountain vistas.
  • Overnight: Knuckles/Kandy area.

Days 6 & 7: The Leopard's Domain

  • Transfer to Yala National Park, the island’s most famous wildlife destination.
  • Enjoy multiple Jeep safaris over two days to increase your chances of spotting the elusive leopard.
  • Key Sightings: Sri Lankan Leopard, Sloth Bear, Elephant, and Crocodile.
  • Overnight: Yala.

Days 8 & 9: Secrets of the Rainforest

  • Travel to Sinharaja Rainforest Reserve, the last viable area of primary tropical rainforest in the country.
  • Spend two days trekking through the dense canopy with an expert naturalist.
  • Key Sightings: Purple-faced Langur, Sri Lanka Blue Magpie, and rare amphibians.
  • Overnight: Sinharaja area.

Day 10: Departure

  • Return to Colombo.
  • Transfer to the airport for your departure flight or extend your stay.

Additional tips

  • Leech socks are essential for Knuckles and Sinharaja treks.
  • Sturdy hiking boots with good grip are a must.
  • Rain gear (poncho) is required for the rainforest.
  • Long trousers/sleeves recommended for trekking to avoid scratches.
  • Binoculars for birdwatching in the forest canopy.
  • Insect repellent for all nature zones.
