About This Trip

Embark on a dynamic 10-day journey that captures the essence of Sri Lanka’s diverse landscapes and rich history. This expedition begins with the bustling, modern-meets-colonial energy of Colombo before venturing deep into the Cultural Triangle. You will climb the spectacular Sigiriya Rock Fortress, cycle through the ancient ruins of Polonnaruwa, and witness the majestic elephants of Minneriya. The journey then ascends into the lush, misty highlands of Kandy and Ella for breathtaking views and spiritual discovery. Finally, trade the mountains for the sea as you explore the cobblestone streets of the UNESCO-listed Galle Fort and unwind on the golden, sun-drenched beaches of Bentota.

Itinerary

Day 1-2: Colombo

  • Arrival in Colombo, the capital city.
  • Explore Colombo’s colonial architecture, bustling markets, and modern shopping malls. Visit places like the Gangaramaya Temple, Independence Square, and the National Museum.

Day 3: Sigiriya

  • Travel to Sigiriya, home to the iconic Sigiriya Rock Fortress.
  • Explore the ancient ruins and frescoes of Sigiriya, and enjoy panoramic views from the top.

Day 4: Polonnaruwa and Minneriya National Park

  • Visit the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
  • Afternoon jeep safari at Minneriya National Park to see elephants and other wildlife.

Day 5: Dambulla and Kandy

  • Explore the Dambulla Cave Temple, a complex of Buddhist cave temples filled with ancient statues and paintings.
  • Travel to Kandy, stopping at a spice garden en route.

Day 6-7: Kandy

  • Visit the Temple of the Tooth Relic, a sacred Buddhist temple in Kandy. Explore the Royal Botanical Gardens and enjoy a cultural dance performance in the evening.
  • Optional day trip to the scenic tea plantations of Nuwara Eliya, known as “Little England.”

Day 8: Ella

  • Travel to Ella, a charming village in the hill country known for its stunning views and hiking opportunities.
  • Visit the Nine Arches Bridge and hike to Ella Rock or Little Adam’s Peak.

Day 9-10: Southern Coast (Galle and Bentota)

  • Drive to Galle, explore the Galle Fort (another UNESCO World Heritage site) and enjoy the coastal views. Transfer to Bentota for relaxation on the beach.
  • Enjoy water activities in Bentota such as snorkeling, diving, or boat rides. Optionally, visit a turtle hatchery or take a river safari on the Madu River.

  • Comfortable walking shoes for ancient ruins and hill country hikes.
  • Modest clothing (covering shoulders/knees) for all temples.
  • Sun protection (hat and sunscreen) for beach and safari days.
  • Light layers for the cooler climate in Ella.
  • Swimwear for southern coast relaxation.
