About This Trip

Immerse yourself in a ornithological paradise with the Avian Treasures of Ceylon, a specialized 10-day expedition crafted for the dedicated bird enthusiast. This journey traverses Sri Lanka’s most critical bio-diverse hotspots, from the misty, high-altitude plateaus of Horton Plains to the steaming, emerald depths of the Sinharaja Rainforest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You will track elusive endemics like the Sri Lanka Blue Magpie and the Whistling Thrush before descending to the southern wetlands of Bundala and Kumana, famous for their vibrant flocks of migratory waterfowl and flamingos.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Colombo

  • Arrive at Bandaranaike International Airport and transfer to your hotel.
  • Explore local birding spots in Colombo (depending on arrival time).
  • Overnight: Colombo.

Days 2 & 3: Montane Mists & Endemics

  • Travel to Horton Plains National Park, a high-altitude plateau of montane grasslands and cloud forests.
  • Spend two days exploring for high-altitude endemics.
  • Key Sightings: Sri Lanka Whistling Thrush, Sri Lanka Bush Warbler, and Dull-blue Flycatcher.

Days 4 & 5: The Rainforest Realm

  • Transfer to Sinharaja Rainforest Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the island’s premier birding location.
  • Spend two days birdwatching in the dense canopy.
  • Key Sightings: Sri Lanka Blue Magpie, Red-faced Malkoha, and Sri Lanka Frogmouth.
  • Overnight: Sinharaja area.

Days 6 & 7: Wetland Wonders

  • Travel to Bundala National Park, renowned for its diverse wetland habitats.
  • Enjoy birdwatching safaris to spot large flocks of water birds.
  • Key Sightings: Greater Flamingos, Painted Storks, and the endemic Sri Lanka Woodshrike.
  • Overnight: Bundala area.

Days 8 & 9: Migratory Haven

  • Head to Kumana National Park on the southeastern coast, famous for its migratory diversity.
  • Spend two days exploring the mangroves and lagoons.
  • Key Sightings: Waterfowl, waders, and various raptors.
  • Overnight: Kumana/Yala area.

Day 10: Departure

  • Return to Colombo.
  • Transfer to the airport for your departure flight or extend your stay.

  • Leech socks are highly recommended for Sinharaja Rainforest.
  • Dull/neutral clothing to blend into the forest.
  • Rain gear (poncho/mac) for rainforest treks.
